South Africa's deputy minister of higher education and training has been slammed after admitting to assaulting a woman.
Mduduzi Manana was allegedly involved in a violent altercation with Mandisa Duma in a nightclub in Johannesburg over the weekend. A case of assault was opened against him on 7 August.
Video footage of the incident circulating on social media has resulted in a barrage of criticism of the deputy minister, including from his own party, the African National Congress. The timing of the incident was auspicious: In South Africa, 9 August is Women’s Day—a public holiday.
