The University of the Witwatersrand has surpassed the University of Cape Town as the top university in Africa in the latest Shanghai university rankings.
The two South African universities were tied last year in the 201-300 band, but UCT slipped to 301-400 while Wits stayed put in the 2017 list.
UCT is usually the top-ranked African university by a comfortable distance on all the other major rankings.
