South Africa’s government embraces open science

The government of South Africa has published an Open Science Framework that commits the country’s researchers and funders to adopting open science practices and embedding them in their incentive structures.

The framework, published on 13 December at the Science Forum South Africa 2018 conference in Pretoria, is the outcome of a policy dialogue between the European Union and South Africa.

It sets the scene for a national Open Science Policy, championed by a new Open Science Advisory Board reporting directly to either the DST executive or the science minister.
