South African universities have pleaded with the private sector not to abandon the higher education system in the wake of the free higher education announcement.
“There is growing concern across the university sector that companies and individual donors who traditionally offered students and universities funding for bursaries are no longer doing so,” Universities South Africa warned in a 16 March statement.
This, USAF said, is because of the government announcement of free higher education for the poor and the working class announced by former finance minister Malusi Gigaba on 21 February.
