SKA environmental plan published to guide building work

The Square Kilometre Array in South Africa inched another step towards construction with the publication of the environmental management plan that will guide building work.

The Integrated Environmental Management Plan for the Square Kilometre Array Phase 1 Mid-Frequency Array in South Africa appeared in the government gazette on 22 March. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research took three years to complete the environmental assessment on which the plan is based.

According to SKA South Africa, the IEMP is a “consolidated management plan including the minimum requirements for the construction and operation phases” of the initial phase of the SKA. This will include environmental monitoring and control, and research to track the impact of the SKA in the Karoo region.
