Blade tells universities to beef up security

Amid fresh protests, minister calls for varsities to protect students and property

South Africa’s higher education minister has called on universities to protect students amid fresh protests over unpaid student debt.

Blade Nzimande, the minister of higher education, science, and technology, urged vice-chancellors on 29 January to protect students and university property. He said they must “tighten up security and take any measures necessary to prevent any form of destruction and to protect life and limb”.
