MPs slam appointment of Sefako Makgatho vice-chancellor

Portfolio committee says it will probe Peter Mbati’s suitability for the role

The South African Parliament’s portfolio committee on higher education, science, and technology has said it is “outraged” by the appointment of Peter Mbati to the top post at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU).

On 3 June the committee raised concerns about allegations of sexual harassment and bribery levelled against Mbati, who assumed duties as SMU vice-chancellor on 1 June.
