Parliament’s unease grows over South Africa’s universities budget

   

Ruling party MP asks science minister unusual question on whether to back or reject budget

An African National Congress MP has highlighted growing unease within South Africa’s ruling party with the country’s fast-eroding universities budget.

Speaking during a 4 May sitting of Parliament, ANC MP Tebogo Letsie asked higher education and science minister Blade Nzimande whether he thought the parliamentary portfolio committee on higher education, science and technology, on which Letsie sits, should vote for or against the Department of Higher Education and Training budget for 2021/22.
