Phethiwe Matutu takes over from Ahmed Bawa who spent six years at the helm

Phethiwe Matutu has taken over from Ahmed Bawa as Chief Executive Officer of Universities South Africa. She took office on 3 October. Bawa has been at the helm since May 2016.

Matutu (pictured) is the former group executive for strategy, planning and partnerships at the National Research Foundation. She spearheaded the NRF’s research impact agenda and oversaw the creation of the African Open Science Platform.
