Wits leads ‘quantum leap’ for South African science

Government R54m grant will lay foundation for “quantum workforce”, says project leader

South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand has been awarded R54 million (US$3m) from the Department of Science and Innovation to advance quantum technology in the country.

The three-year grant will fund the South African Quantum Technologies Initiative. It will train a community of quantum scientists and work with the government to draft new laws to regulate the emerging technology area.
