South Africa’s marine life threatened by outdated oil and gas prospecting laws
South African scientists have backed calls to stop marine prospectors using sound waves to map oil and gas reserves under the ocean floor, citing possible harm to marine life.
Their statement comes after a surveying ship prospecting for petroleum giant Shell was forced to cease operations off South Africa’s east coast after a successful court challenge by environmental activists.
