South Africa readies ‘war room’ for 2024 university registrations

Government claims readiness but general election and funding cuts could add to tensions, parliament hears

South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training has announced that it will activate a “war room” to address any challenges that arise during the 2024 university registration period, following yet another turbulent year for the sector.

The department’s director-general Nkosinathi Sishi told a parliamentary committee briefing on 8 December that the war room would incorporate a “monitoring tool” to assess plans for funding new and returning students.
