South African science to be cut by R3bn over three years

Department told to “reprioritise” as “serious fiscal constraints” force finance minister’s hand

The Department of Science and Innovation will have its budget cut by an average 3.4 per cent per year between now and 2026-27.

The annual budget, published on 21 February, delivers a total R3 billion (US$155 million) reduction in the department’s budget over the next three years.
