Study reveals poor career outlook for South Africa’s postdocs

Entry-level academic jobs grew ten times slower than postdoc numbers from 2007 to 2019

South Africa’s growing cohort of postdoctoral students face dismal academic employment opportunities, a study has revealed.

Scouring national data, two Stellenbosch-based researchers found that the growth in postdocs outstripped the growth in entry-level academic positions in the country by a factor of ten to one between 2007 and 2019.
