Eastern Cape’s embattled universities make slight headway

Science infrastructure has improved, but electricity, water and funding challenges remain

Universities in South Africa’s poorest province, the Eastern Cape, have improved their research capabilities in recent years. But they still face “major” resource constraints, a committee of MPs has said.

The findings come in a report tabled in parliament on 7 March by the oversight committee on higher education, science and innovation, after it visited several institutions in the province in February.
