Government opts for science-based approach to Vaal river clean-up after herbicide use sparks outcry

Research and innovation are needed to restore South Africa’s polluted Vaal river system, the country’s water and sanitation minister has said.

Senzo Mchunu’s public statement on 14 April followed a high-level workshop held two days earlier at the Emerald Resort and Casino, near the Vaal river, to address river pollution and the use of potentially harmful chemicals to control invasive alien plants.
