Ghana’s Council of Independent Universities is urging the National Accreditation Board to review the way young and private universities in the country are affiliated to older institutions.
A Ghana News Agency report quoted CIU chairman Osei Darkwa as saying that forcing young universities to affiliate with mentoring institutions is damaging the standard and quality of education at the longer-established bodies. He said this is because time spent guiding the newer institutions is leading to neglect of the mentoring university. The proliferation of private universities in Ghana is a burden for mentoring institutions, said Darkwa.
An affiliated university operates independently but has a collaborative agreement with an older and larger institution that will control and influence its academic policies, standards or programmes.
