Ghana president urges universities to set own research priorities

Ghana’s new president, Akufo Addo, has urged African universities to set their own unique priorities in research and education instead of letting international organisations dictate the pace.

Addo was speaking at the 14th General Conference and 50th anniversary of the Association of African Universities on 5 June in Accra. The Voice of Nigeria newspaper reported him as saying that African leaders need to invest in education.

“Africa must set her own priorities on any of its education levels and locate where to invest its funds in the education sector. Africa must never rely on the World Bank or any other development partners on where to focus between the basic and higher education,” he said.
