Fixed-term academics are “deeply pessimistic” about their career prospects, according to a study which shows that only one in four is confident of taking on a continuing contract in the next five years.
The study, carried out by a PhD candidate at Griffith University, surveyed 3,100 casuals in 19 institutions. It found that although 54 per cent of casuals–and 64 per cent of those with a PhD–aspired to take a continuing academic position, only 27 per cent expected to do so.
