Melbourne’s staff threaten to act over academic freedom threat

Academics at the University of Melbourne are threatening to strike over what they claim is a threat to their academic freedom, The Age reports.

According to the newspaper, staff members are unhappy about being asked to sign agreements that their research will fit with the direction being taken by their department. They fear that a failure to align their work could lead to redundancy.

However, the university says that the clause is a “suggestion” designed for extreme situations.
