Countries’ research sectors crack on with reforms to make up for lost time in 2023

Recovering from the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic slower than many other countries and battling the inflation crisis that came in its wake, Australia and New Zealand have weathered turbulent times over the last few years. But their research and higher education sectors had no time to take a breath throughout the steadier waters of 2023.

This year the Australian government pressed ahead with major reforms and New Zealand’s politics took a sharp turn to the right.
