Xenophon forces review of cuts to ABC Pacific broadcasts

South Australian independent senator Nick Xenophon has secured a federal review of a decision to end Radio Australia’s shortwave broadcasts to the Asia Pacific.

The Senate powerbroker, who has been described by New South Wales Labor senator Sam Dastyari as “the most powerful man in federal parliament”, won the concession as part of a crossbench deal on government media reforms.

Xenophon and his party, the Nick Xenophon Team, made the review a condition of their support for a bill by the Turnbull government to change media ownership rules in Australia.
