Soured Australia-China relations may be ‘reset’ under Morrison

China is willing to rebuild its diplomatic relations with Australia following the federal leadership crisis that toppled former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, one of the country’s leading news sites has said.

The Global Times, an English-language daily that covers international issues, suggests that relations may be about to improve even though Turnbull’s replacement, former treasurer Scott Morrison, “has yet to prove himself” as a leader who can develop a more positive relationship with China.

“China-Australia ties have deteriorated rapidly, thanks to Canberra. Over the past two years, China-bashing has become a theme in [federal] foreign policy,” a Global Times editorial says.
