‘No credible strategy’ in US response to China, says expert

China is the most economically formidable adversary the United States “has ever faced”, threatening its global leadership and dominance in the Asia-Pacific region, a top Australian defence studies academic has said.

Hugh White, professor of strategic studies at the Australian National University in Canberra, says the US “lacks a credible strategy” to deal with China under the Trump administration.

In an editorial for the ANU’s online policy magazine East Asia Forum, White questions whether Trump’s policy advisers understand that China is “a serious strategic rival” for global power and influence.
