National curriculum reforms to make NZ history compulsory

New Zealand’s primary and secondary schools will be required to teach “the full range” of the country’s history under radical curriculum changes to be introduced over the next three years, prime minister Jacinda Ardern has announced.

The changes will make NZ history compulsory in all schools and will also emphasise the country’s contemporary role as a Pacific Islands nation.

The move will be watched closely in Australia, where conservative education lobby groups are opposed to similar changes to the national curriculum to include Indigenous history and languages.
