Sydney academic writes of tensions between local and central authorities over coronavirus communication

A battle is being waged between China’s local and central governments over access to information about the spread of the contagious and potentially deadly coronavirus, a University of Sydney media academic has said.

Joyce Nip, a journalist and lecturer with the university’s departments of Chinese studies and media and communications, has previously written about the influence of official agencies and mainstream news media in shaping public opinion in China.
