Australia needs a better understanding of the contributions made by research in the arts and social science, says John Germov, social research director at the University of Newcastle, NSW.
Germov has been appointed president of the Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. The organisation represents 45 universities across Australia and New Zealand, and is the leading body for research and education in the arts, social sciences and humanities.
In a statement announcing his appointment, Germov said research in the arts underpinned public policy and shaped “big issues” that are driving social and economic change. These include understanding the social impact of an ageing population, labour trends and land use.
