RIRDC would lose staff and funding with forced move

Staff at the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation in Canberra are unwilling to move to a regional city as part of a federal decentralisation plan, a Senate budget hearing has been told.

The Abbott government wants to relocate three research agencies from Canberra to regional cities in New South Wales and Tasmania, at a cost of almost $40 million.

Under the proposal, RIRDC would move to Albury-Wodonga, on the border of NSW and Victoria. The Grains Research and Development Corporation will shift to Wagga Wagga in rural NSW, and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation to Hobart in Tasmania.
