Tropical heat drives trainee dropout rate

Climate has been overlooked as a reason for a “persistently low” rate of apprentices finishing their training programmes in northern Australia, according to research by Charles Darwin University in Alice Springs.

A study led by training policy researcher Don Zoellner at the CDU Northern Institute has found as link between the extreme heat of northern summers and high attrition rates for apprenticeships that involve working outdoors.

The findings are published in the International Journal of Training Research.
