Monash working with Sri Lanka on dengue control

Australian foreign minister Julie Bishop has announced a research partnership between Sri Lanka’s health ministry and Monash University in Melbourne to curb the spread of dengue fever.

Sri Lanka is the seventh country to join the university’s Eliminate Dengue Programme, which is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the US Agency for International Development.

Since 2011, the EDP has been conducting field trials into the use of a naturally occurring bacteria called Wolbachia to reduce the ability of mosquitoes to transmit the dengue virus.
