Oil pollution affecting survival of coral reef fish

Scientists in northern Queensland have found that exposure to even small amounts of petroleum-based oil can severely disrupt the behaviour and survival of coral reef fish.

A study by James Cook University with the University of Texas and Norway’s Institute of Marine Research found that oil spills can significantly alter the ability of juvenile coral reef fish to detect predators and find suitable habitat.

The findings are published in Nature Ecology & Evolution
