Newcastle study finds hemp can clean up toxic residues

Hemp could be used to treat soil and water pollution caused by chemical firefighting foams, according to research by the University of Newcastle in regional New South Wales.

Scientists from the Centre of Excellence for Geotechnical Science and Engineering at Newcastle have demonstrated that hemp seed can remove toxic per and poly fluoroalkyl (PFAS) from water contaminated by firefighting foams.

Announcing details, lead researcher Brett Turner said the team had found hemp seed powder “contains proteins that appear to be very effective” at removing PFAS pollutants from water.
