A book that explores the history of Sydney’s quarantine station has won the New South Wales Premier’s regional history prize.
Stories from the Sandstone is co-authored by Australian National University archaeologist Ursula Frederick and University of Sydney historians Peter Hobbins and Annie Clarke.
It traces the experiences of migrants who arrived at the North Head quarantine station by ship between 1832 and its closure in 1984. These experiences include the personal tragedies and social impacts of diseases such as bubonic plague, smallpox, typhus and influenza.
