Rural sports academy to mentor top student athletes

One of Australia’s leading regional universities is to launch a sports academy to help its student athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite-level sports competitions.

The University of New England in north-west New South Wales will officially open the UNE Sports Academy on 11 May at its Armidale campus.

The initiative follows the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane during April, at which UNE student and triathlete Gillian Backhouse won a gold medal.
