Shape-shifting beanie could make snow sports safer

Rob Joseph, a medical engineering student at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, has designed a knitted beanie that can double as a protective helmet for snowboarders.

The beanie contains a non-Newtonian fluid that hardens on impact, protecting the wearer from concussion and other head injuries.

Joseph (above left) started working on the idea after taking up snowboarding. He is working with QUT civil engineering student Brodie Robinson (above right) and business student Liam Norris (above middle) to refine and market the design.
