QUT enzyme could reduce clothing waste sent to landfill

Technique to separate and recycle polyester may help fashion industry become more sustainable

A commercial enzyme that can separate and extract polyester from textile blends for recycling is being developed by scientists at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane.

Research led by Robert Speight and Laura Navone from the university’s institute for future environments has found that the enzyme can dissolve wool fibres from polyester and wool blend fabrics without damaging the polyester strands.
