Aboriginal flags lowered to mourn ‘loss of country’ to fires

  

Gesture acknowledges the grief felt by Indigenous communities

Deakin University in regional Victoria is flying Aboriginal flags at half-mast across all its campuses as a mark of respect for loss of country in Australia’s devastating bushfires.

Gabrielle Fletcher, director of the institute for Koorie education, said the gesture acknowledged the grief and loss felt by Indigenous communities.
