Insomnia epidemic costs billions in poor health

Lack of sleep is costing Australia around $66 billion annually in health costs and lost productivity, according to a study commissioned by the Sleep Health Foundation.

It also found that sleep deprivation had caused the deaths of more than 3,000 people in 2016-17, chiefly due to industrial accidents and drivers falling asleep at the wheel.

The Sleep Health Foundation is a research partner in the Cooperative Research Centre for Alertness Safety and Productivity, which was set up in 2014 to monitor and manage public safety risks caused by inadequate sleep.
