Adelaide to host ‘game changing’ food waste research centre

A bid to set up a national research centre to tackle Australia’s growing food waste problem has received a $30-million grant from the federal government’s Cooperative Research Centres programme.

The Fight Food Waste CRC has attracted more than 50 research partners who will contribute a further $103m over 10 years. It will involve farm industry R&D organisations, food processors, retailers and food distribution charities.

Foodbank Australia, the country’s biggest hunger relief charity, has described the CRC as “a game changer” in tackling a problem that costs the country’s economy around $20 billion annually.
