Hospital medical staff can experience chronic sleep deprivation if rosters do not allow sufficient recovery time between shift changes, a national research centre has found.
A study led by the Alertness Cooperative Research Centre compared three different shifts—day, evening and night—and their impact on the alertness and performance of nurses and doctors.
It involved 52 medical staff working at the intensive care unit of Austin Hospital in Melbourne. The results are published online in the Nature journal Scientific Reports.
