National centre necessary to maintain year-round science capability and mitigate impact of fires, says CRC
Bushfire research in Australia has been frustrated by short-term funding that has resulted in a “wind-up and wind-down of capability” despite an increased risk of large-scale fires due to climate change, a Senate inquiry has been told.
The Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre has called for a permanent national bushfire research institute to be funded by governments, universities and fire management agencies.
