Geelong to host hi-tech fibre research hub

AN AU$100 million centre for fibre research is under construction at Deakin University in Victoria’s Geelong region, the government said on 25 September.

The Australian Future Fibres Research and Innovation Centre is a collaboration between CSIRO, the national science agency, Deakin University and the Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing.

The centre will have a pilot-scale research plant, which can produce commercial quantities of carbon fibre that is central to a number of advanced materials used in aeronautical and other engineering, the government said.

The government has contributed AU$37m from the Education Investment Fund to the centre, which will employ 300 scientists and PhD students.
