Australia’s top science agency has dismissed reports that it will cut up to 1,500 casual and contract jobs as a result of the Abbott government’s freeze on public service recruitment.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s chief executive Megan Clark, above, issued a public statement on 8 November, saying the figure was incorrect.
Clark said the CSIRO would not be renewing around 300 fixed term contracts due to finish this financial year, which was a “higher than usual” number of non-renewals. But the agency would continue to recruit, and was currently advertising 50 jobs, mainly for post-doctoral fellows, she said.
