CSIRO to work on drug tests for the unemployed

Australia’s top science agency will help the federal government develop and administer a controversial system to test thousands of welfare recipients for illegal drugs such as methamphetamines.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will work with the federal Department of Social Services to analyse data obtained from the tests.

The drug tests were announced by federal treasurer Scott Morrison in the May 2017 budget as part of a government crackdown on welfare payments for the unemployed.
