Higher suicide risk for young military veterans

Young men who leave the Australian Defence Force in their early twenties have a higher than average risk of suicide, according to a federal agency report.

The 15-year study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that former servicemen aged from 18 to 24 years were twice as likely to die by suicide as men of the same age in the general population.

Launching the report, AIHW director Barry Sandison said it showed that men who were currently serving in the ADF or in defence reserves were “considerably less likely to die by suicide than Australian men generally”.
