Whale shark dives worth $12m to economy

Australia’s sharks are becoming a major tourist attraction, with ocean shark dive tours contributing more than $25 million to the national economy, according to a federal research agency.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville worked with marine biologists at three universities to survey more than 700 shark dive operators in coastal areas of New South Wales, northern Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

The results are published in Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries.
