Start-ups use libraries and cafés more than university campuses

Australia’s universities are not playing a major role in supporting start-up companies and entrepreneurs, a national survey of more than 3,000 young businesses has revealed.

University campuses are used by only 6 per cent of people involved in start-ups, the survey found. Home (55 per cent) and shared office spaces (51 per cent) are the most popular working locations. Around 7 per cent work from public libraries and 18 per cent use cafés.

Only 6 per cent said that a university-based programme for entrepreneurs had been a critical factor in starting a business.
