Review rejects Defence bid for tighter research controls

An independent review of federal laws governing the sale and publication of defence-related R&D has rejected claims that regulations must be strengthened to protect Australia’s national security.

Instead, the review of the Defence Trade Controls Act has recommended “more effective” communication between universities, researchers and the Department of Defence.

The tighter controls proposed by Defence for research involving “foreign powers” would have had implications for collaborative projects between Australian universities and China.
