Australian marine research programme asked for A$94 million but only got A$59m

Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation is looking for “other sources of funding” to make full use of its Investigator research vessel.

The dedicated research ship is currently scheduled to operate at roughly two-thirds of its capacity in the 2025-26 sailing year. In a Senate estimates hearing on 15 February, CSIRO chief executive Doug Hilton said the organisation was “looking at our forward budgets for the Investigator”. For 2025-26, “the Investigator is not funded for the full 300 [possible] days of sailing”.
