Deakin’s ‘hot fire’ simulator wins defence contract

A $2.16-million federal defence science contract has been awarded to Deakin University in regional Victoria to develop a virtual reality training system for navy firefighting crews.

The augmented reality technology was created by the university’s Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation in Geelong, working in collaboration with American company General Dynamics Information Technology.

The system is called a Flaim Trainer, and allows trainee firefighters to gain “hot fire” experience in a safe environment.
